Polls are going to have to much impact on how people vote as well thinking that these polls must be right and must be correct in what they are telling us. Who will care about making judgment about the characters of these that are running for office and who will care about did they vote this way or that way on the issues. Many will just be satisfied with he or she speaks so well or has a good smile or has a good mate or can be witty or so many of those Oh so important things that one must have to be the ONE. This can either be just dribble or something that can make yourself look into the mirror and say am I going to just go and cast a vote for what is right and for what is good and because America and its sovereignty and freedoms and rights matter. Ignacio Ramos getting out of prison.
Just a few minutes ago -- during his
last full day in office -- Pres. Bush commuted the sentences of these former
Border Patrol agents.
They were convicted of violating Border Patrol
policies in the non-fatal shooting of a drug smuggler in 2005.

Toward the
end, many people told us that our last-minute efforts were futile. But thanks to
all of you who took action even while believing it likely would lead to nothing.
Time after time through the years, NumbersUSA faxers have seen what look like
political miracles happen because masses of citizens just don't give up in the
face of seemingly insurmountable odds. Hundreds of thousands faxes and emails
went to the White House through NumbersUSA recently.
Ramos and Compean
have already served two years in prison, primarily in solitary confinement with
only a few minutes a month to talk on the phone with their wives and children.
Most of their Border Patrol agents believe their firing at a fleeing
drug smuggler/illegal alien did not come close to justifying jail time. But the
Bush Administration continued to treat them as dangerous felons.
"The president has reviewed the circumstances of this case as a whole
and the conditions of confinement and believes the sentences they received are
too harsh and that they, and their families, have suffered enough for their
crimes," an administration official stated.
"Commuting their sentences
does not diminish the seriousness of their crimes. Ramos and Compean are
convicted felons who violeted their oaths to uphold the law and have been
severely punished. The commutation gives them an opportunity to return to their
families and communities, but both men will have to carry the burden of being
convicted felons and the shame of violating their oaths for the rest of their
lives."
Ramos and Compean won't be
allowed out of prison until March 20. But they will still be home with their
families 8-9 years earlier than if Bush had not acted.
Our tactic
recently has been to tell Mr. Bush that regardless of whether he believed the
agents were guilty as convicted of violating Border Patrol firearms policies,
they had already spent more time in prison than the charge deserved. That seems
to be exactly the position that Mr. Bush has taken.
For most supporters
of the Border Patrol, the Bush Administration's comments about Ramos and Compean
as terrible criminals are excessively harsh and undeserved.
But I think
we can all at least say thank you to Pres. Bush today for getting these men out
of prison.
And I send my thanks out also to the dozens of other
organizations that fought this fight (some of them far more diligently than us),
as well as to the dozen or so Members of Congress who kept this issue alive
right through last weekend.

A VICTORY FOR AMERICA IN ARIZONA NOV. 4 ELECTIONS
There's no getting around it; Yesterday's election was a heart breaker. Our hero Lou Barletta came within just a few points. Our efforts were not entirely ignored. The American Spectator wrote, "If Lou Barletta is elected, you can thank Bay Buchanan and Tom Tancredo's Team America PAC." We lost by the same narrow margin in our other independent expenditure race in Alabama where Parker Griffith narrowly defeated Wayne Parker Jr. I know it's a small consolation; but these were the two strongest for Republican takeovers in the entire House of Representatives other than Team America candidate Tom Rooney who defeated sex scandal plagued Tim Mahoney.
We also have some great fresh faces. In Florida, Tom Rooney took out incumbent Paul Mahoney. My old friend Tom McClintock who has been a leader for decades in the fight to secure our borders appears to have squeaked out a victory and will be bringing his fight to Congress (the results may be contested.) Duncan Hunter's son Duncan D. Hunter will takeover his father's seat, bringing with him the same dedication and principles. And we cannot forget that Jason Chaffetz who took out Chris Cannon in the primary-still our biggest victory to date. In the Senate; Jim Risch-who is as strong as Jeff Sessions-is taking over pro-amnesty Larry Craig's seat.
We also managed to save some of our heroes. We already helped Paul Broun and Walter Jones fend off big money primary challengers; and they held their own in the general election. Michelle Bachmann, Rob Wittman, and Virgil Goode staved off millions of dollars of attacks from National Democratic donors.
One thing is clear, this election was not a mandate for open borders. This was a rejection of the Bush presidency-including his support for amnesty. This is a real disappointment, but we cannot give up. We still have some great candidates in Louisiana whose election was delayed running in December; and we will fight for a pardon for Ramos in Compean. Then we will redouble our efforts in the next Congress; to defeat.
We blocked Amnesty with an open borders president and a Democratic Congress in 2007; and we will be prepared to do so in 2009 and 2010; and then we'll take back Congress in the next election.
A Victory in California

DEAR FRIENDS,
CHICAGO -- Changing planes here seems an appropriate place to anticipate the results and congratulate Sen. Obama on his victory. As NumbersUSA faxers know, I have rated most past immigration actions and campaign promises of both Sen. Obama and Sen. McCain as "bad" to "abysmal."
But I feel mildly optimistic at this moment about the next Presidency.
That is because President-Elect Obama must choose between two sets of contradictory campaign promises. If a small army of committed citizens can force the news media and politicians to look at the contradiction, I think we will be fine.
2 CONTRADICTORY PROMISES
A President Obama can't really do both of these:
Will he honor the barely whispered perfunctory campaign pledges to offer U.S. citizenship to an estimated 7 million illegal foreign workers, plus their 5-13 million relatives?
Or will he honor what has appeared to be his loudest shouted priority to put Americans back to work?
We know that Obama -- like McCain -- in his heart of hearts wants to help out the illegal aliens.
But every illegal foreign worker given amnesty permanently ties up a U.S. job that an unemployed U.S.-born worker or long-time legal immigrant is seeking in these hard times.
SOME GOOD OBAMA PROMISES WE CAN SUPPORT
Whatever the Obama campaign may have said about immigration before the stock market crash, his priorities have clearly changed and immigration policy will have to serve his top priority of getting American workers back into jobs that offer decent wages and benefits, especially health insurance.
I certainly hope that every Obama Administration action on immigration -- including enforcement, regulations and proposals to Congress -- will be weighed for its effect on the growing number of American workers out of work.
Here are two great Obama campaign themes that he emphasized a lot more than his support for amnesty:
He expressed strong support for E-Verify and keeping illegal aliens out of jobs that American workers so desperately need.
And he stated his commitment to holding employers accountable if they hire illegal workers.
His campaign website, BarackObama.com, says, "To remove incentives to enter the country illegally, we need to crack down on employers that hire undocumented immigrants."
The website also brags about an amendment that Obama cosponsored with Senators Charles Grassley (R-IA), Ted Kennedy (D-MA) and Max Baucus (D-MT) to ensure that "employers can verify that their employees are legally eligible to work in the U.S." In a Dear Colleague letter sent to all Senators about this amendment, Obama said he "strongly support[s> creating an effective, mandatory employment verification system for all employers to verify the legal status of their workers."
Thus, Obama has shown his support for what ought to be the first, second and third actions of his Presidency:
Tell Democratic congressional leaders to stop bottling up the E-Verify reauthorization and pass it without the additions of hundreds of thousands of foreign workers sought by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Sen. Menendez (D-N.J.).
Begin working with Democrat Rep. Heath Shuler of North Carolina to pass his SAVE Act that would provide the phased-in mandatory verification system that Obama supported in his letter to all Senators.
Open up tens of thousands of jobs for Americans by stating even before he is sworn in that he will continue the new Executive Order requiring all federal contractors to use E-Verify to keep illegal aliens out of those jobs..
If Obama follows his own instincts and past words of support for turning off the jobs magnet for illegal immigration, he potentially will open up millions of jobs for millions of unemployed Americans.
This would be the cheapest, fastest job-creation program he has any chance of achieving.
Or he can choose to favor illegal foreign workers and turn his back on unemployed Americans.
In the current economic climate, it now seems logically inconceivable that Obama would consider proposing an amnesty or any other legalization program that would permanently remove an estimated 7 million jobs from America's legitimate workers while nearly 10 million Americans are actively searching for jobs and can't find them, mostly in the same construction, service and manufacturing fields.
WOULD AMERICANS REALLY TAKE JOBS ILLEGAL ALIENS DO?
Of course, the elitist view is that unemployed Americans wouldn't do the jobs that illegal aliens now fill.
With few exceptions, this demonstrably is not true.
As the Center for Immigration Studies has often shown in analyzing U.S. Department of Labor data, all but one of the several hundred occupations tracked have a majority workforce of native-born Americans.
The only exception is agricultural pickers. Some people estimate that as many as 1 million pickers are illegal aliens. Various government studies have concluded that the U.S. actually has enough legal pickers (mostly foreign-born but legal immigrants) to harvest the crops if they were deployed in a better fashion that allowed them to work a longer part of the year and make more money. But if E-Verify were made mandatory, the likelihood is that growers would fill the illegals' jobs with legal temporary foreign workers.
That would still leave around 6 million illegal aliens with jobs mainly in construction, service and manufacturing occupations, all of which are mainly filled with U.S. born citizens.
Not only are nearly 10 million Americans actively searching for jobs but failing to find them, but there are around 25 million American working-age adults with no more than a high school education who do not have a job. (The number is much higher than the 10 million official unemployment figure because that figure only includes people who have actively sought a job in the last month.)
These lesser-educated Americans who are outside of the labor market are precisely the people who would be helped if the 6 million illegal aliens not in agriculture were to be forced to give up their jobs.
Friends, the logic, the practicality, the political viability and the clear morality of this jobs program should prevail if you will join us at NumbersUSA in ensuring that every Member of Congress and the Obama Administration hear about it continuously for the next few months.

By Mark Alexander If you are perplexed, even bewildered, by the number of Americans who normally make logical and rational decisions but now support Barack Obama, I refer you to a lucid explanation for this phenomenon in the opening pages of the candidate’s political autobiography, The Audacity of Hope. He writes, “I am new enough on the national political scene that I serve as a blank screen on which people of vastly different political stripes project their own views... I am bound to disappoint some... of them.” Beyond the projection and deception, however, elections have consequences. Some of Obama’s supporters, the formerly logical and rational, will be first in the soup line of deceived disappointees expressing buyer’s remorse. They will awaken from the stupor of all the good feelings that attracted them to Obama and face the hard realities of the Socialist agenda they enabled. In this, the final week of the ‘08 presidential campaign, Obama bought 30 minutes of prime time on several networks to air an infomercial in which he endeavored to pass as something other than the ideological Socialist he is. Feigning the fiscal conservatism of Ronald Reagan, Obama claimed he would review the budget, line by line, and cut waste. He even made taxing and spending, a.k.a. “the collectivist redistribution of wealth,” sound like a noble democratic gesture. At one point he said, “Just because I want to spread the wealth around, they call me a socialist. The next thing you know, they will call me a communist because I shared my peanut butter sandwich in kindergarten!” Cute. Of course, Barack Obama isn’t proposing to “share” his sandwich. Instead, he’s proposing to take your sandwich and share it with someone else. He’s assuming that you aren’t charitable enough to share it yourself. Truth is, it is unlikely Obama ever shared a sandwich with anyone. With an average annual income of more than $500,000 between 2000 and 2006, Barack and Michelle only gave two percent—two percent—of their income to charity. Obama’s running mate is even more miserly. The Bidens’ income averaged $260,000 over the last 10 years, but they averaged just $650 a year in charitable giving. So much for “spreading the wealth around.” Meanwhile, Sen. John McCain centered his soapbox message on Obama’s penchant to redistribute wealth, even uttering the word “socialist” in several interviews—and not a minute too soon. Of course, Socialist policies are now the centerpiece of the once great Democratic Party, packaged under the aegis of “fairness and equality” or “investments in our infrastructure and people.” Obama uses code words such as “political and economic justice” and “coalition of powers through which you bring about redistributive change.” In the last two months, however, given the crisis of confidence in our economy, Obama’s Socialist rhetoric has become bolder. Perhaps he’s heeding the counsel of his mentors’ mentor, Karl Marx, who wrote, “A new revolution is possible only in consequence of a new crisis.” The fingerprints of Obama’s radical Socialist mentors are all over his “vision for America” —from his early childhood tutor, Communist Party USA member Frank Marshall Davis, to his black radical spiritual advisor, Jeremiah Wright, to the benefactors who launched his political career, radical terrorists William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn. These are the Leftists who fed Obama’s unmitigated narcissism and shaped his warped worldview, which he now seeks to inflict upon the entire nation. Even his campaign icon implies “Obama over America.” Of course, when asked about his relationship with these radicals, Obama responds, “[These people] are not advisors or donors to my campaign,” at which point an adoring press corps dutifully moves on to the next question. Despite having spent 20 years as a disciple of Wright, the man who officiated at Obama’s marriage and baptized his children, the man whom Obama describes as “a father figure,” he claims he never inhaled any of his spiritual mentor’s racial hatred—never even heard any of it. Obama claims that Bill Ayers was “just a guy in my neighborhood,” and “I was just eight years old when he was a terrorist.” However, Obama was 34 when Ayers used his radical celebrity to launch Obama’s political career, and he was 40 when this unrepentant terrorist was featured in a New York Times article (on the morning of September 11, 2001) and quoted in the opening paragraph proclaiming, “I don’t regret setting bombs. I feel we didn’t do enough.” Ayers added, “America makes me want to puke.” Obama was working on his second major “philanthropic” project with Ayers at that time. In addition, there are Obama’s ties to the Socialist New Party, the ACORN crowd, Father Michael Pfleger, Khalid al-Mansour, Kwame Kilpatrick, Louis Farrakhan, Tony Rezko, Rashid Khalidi, Raila Odinga and other haters, hard Leftists and convicted felons. George Bernard Shaw once wrote, “A government which robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul.” All committed Socialists understand this principle. For example, when Obama asserts, “We’ll ensure that economic justice is served—that’s what this election is about... I think when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody,” that is tantamount to buying votes. Michelle Obama echoes her husband’s redistributionist philosophy: “The truth is, in order to get things like universal healthcare and a revamped education system, then someone is going to have to give up a piece of their pie so that someone else can have more.” In 1916, a minister and outspoken advocate for liberty, William J. H. Boetcker, published a pamphlet entitled The Ten Cannots . “You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot help the poor man by destroying the rich. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred. You cannot build character and courage by taking away man’s initiative and independence. You cannot help small men by tearing down big men. You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income. You cannot establish security on borrowed money. You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they will not do for themselves.” A century later, Democrats are utterly ignorant of these principles. In fact, Barack Obama’s campaign is built around their antithesis—“The Ten Cans.” I was speaking with a friend recently, a man who lived most of his life under the Communist regime in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. He has spent several years and continues to incur many legal expenses in his endeavor to become a U.S. citizen, but he has since lost his enthusiasm. “The prospect of an Obama presidency is like dèja vu for me,” he explained. “The socialist goal back home was that everyone had equal wealth. They met that goal—eventually no one had anything. Any attempt to work harder to achieve a better standard of living for your family was considered contrary to the welfare of the state, and dutifully discouraged. Socialism is a big hole, easy to fall into and hard to climb out of.” He lamented, “The American dream is not something I want to wake up from—but too many Americans have no idea what they have, and are about to lose it. Socialism seems an appealing ideal, collective ownership, equal society, ‘sharing the wealth,’ et cetera. But it has a downside: It doesn’t work.” Indeed it doesn’t work. It creates wards of the state—slaves, if you will. In the 1980s, I spent enough time in Socialist countries, including the old USSR, to know that we want to avoid, at all costs, a USSA. If we could gather up all Americans who, knowingly or unknowingly, support collectivist policies like those espoused by Barack Obama and transport them to the old USSR for a week, they could see the terminus of such policies—the walking dead—and the wisest among them would rethink their support for statist concepts such as “sharing the wealth.” It is no small irony that as the younger generations of former Communist countries around the world are moving rapidly toward liberty and free enterprise, our nation is moving rapidly toward Socialism and a tyranny of the few. Barack Obama recently said, “I don’t find myself particularly scary or particularly risky.” It was a weak attempt at self-effacing humor, but make no mistake: Barack Hussein Obama’s Socialist policies are both scary and risky. “Hope” and “change” may be pleasant catchall bromides, but as Benjamin Franklin wrote in Poor Richard’s Almanac, “He that lives upon Hope will die fasting.” On change, John Adams wrote, “A Constitution of Government once changed from Freedom, can never be restored. Liberty, once lost, is lost forever.” To that end, in 1787, the year our Constitution was adopted, Thomas Jefferson, wrote, “The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. Income Redistribution: Barack decides who pays
Why would the Party that has been relentlessly denouncing the Bush tax cuts turn around and give anyone another tax cut? Barack Obama’s “Making Work Pay” tax program would purportedly give 95 percent of Americans a tax cut—including 44 percent who would owe no federal income taxes. What seems a discrepancy, however, is really downright deception. Far from being a tax cut, Obama’s plan would actually give an income tax credit of up to $500 to folks who pay no income taxes. Rather it is based on what they pay into Social Security. As columnist William McGurn points out in The Wall Street Journal, this is not income tax relief but payroll tax relief. Of course, the relief wouldn’t come from the Social Security fund, as touching the Third Rail would be political suicide. Instead, it would come from “general revenues” —i.e., the taxes of those who actually do pay federal income taxes.
McGurn quips, “With one touch of the Obama magic, what otherwise would be described as taking money from Peter to pay Paul is now transformed into Paul’s tax relief: Where a tax cut for payroll taxes paid will not in fact come from payroll taxes. And where all these plans come together under the rhetorical umbrella of ‘Making Work Pay’.” Not only that, but it would also fundamentally change Social Security from an earned benefit, distributed based on an individual’s “contributions” into the system, into a welfare program, granted for not contributing. Propping it all up would be the confiscated dollars of wealthier taxpayers.
Climate change this week: Record cold
“Funny how economic concerns pull the mind away from foolishness such as global warming,” writes Investor’s Business Daily (IBD). “But weather goes on, and in many places it doesn’t happen the way fear mongers predict.” Case in point: Alaska’s glaciers actually grew during the winter of 2007-2008 after about two centuries of shrinking. This is a trend not confined to Alaska. The International Arctic Research Center says there was 29 percent more Arctic sea ice this year than last year. Oregon and California are reporting record low temperatures and Boise, Idaho, even saw nearly two inches of snow earlier than ever before. South Africa and New Zealand are just beginning to come out of winter but are still experiencing record snow and cold. As IBD notes, “These... developments, taken together or separately, don’t disprove the global warming theory. But unlike climate projection models, which are often wrong but endlessly thrown in our faces as examples of hard science, they are real world events wholly contrary to the story the alarmists have been spreading.”
Meanwhile, another sign that winter is fast approaching is Al Gore’s recent speech at Harvard University. He told students that our future challenge will be to find truth in the climate crisis and “use that as a basis of a new concept of who we are.” Ironically, Cambridge, Massachusetts, hit near-record low temperatures the night of Gore’s speech. We’re just surprised it didn’t snow.

Both of your Senators and your Representative. You've got to move fast to avoid missing out on your $3.5M "personal bail out”!” No, not without more input. However, If you took that same $700B figure and divided among the 200M+ adults in this country, each would get about we $3.5M. With that we could all pay off our mortgages (voila, the mortgage industry is saved), send our kids to college (create a more educated electorate), and buy new energy efficient cars
(Wow, help clean up the environment while giving the auto industry a boost), begin to save for medical needs, and begin saving for retirement. Even the lowest level mail room person and data entry person would get the same amount as the highest paid CEO (of course that is all the CEO should get, if anything - after all, they let the economy get where it is today!). To top off this deal, the Govt. would get about 30% of each adult's $3.5M, or $1.05M in taxes. A single person would end up with over $2M and a married couple would have over $4M. What could be fairer than that? Look, you would be doing something for all American people, not just the Wall Street Boys & Girls!

Who will deliver us from our certain financial despair and ruin? The president? The secretary of the Treasury? The Federal Reserve? Congress? An ad hoc committee of Harvard MBAs? Some of America's best and biggest financial moguls? A new president? Have no fear. Our Founders are here.
It's true that we can't repeat the past eight years of government. But it's even truer that we can't repeat the past 38 years of the government's financial mismanagement, especially when only four of them since 1970 haven't been deficit-building years. What we need is to turn back the financial clock 200 years and return to the fiscal prudence of our Founding Fathers.
-- Restrict spending within constitutional limits. The 10th Amendment restricts the size of government, and that always should bear out in spending and the federal budget. That means cutting hundreds of billions the Fed shouldn't be spending. That means following congressional protocol. That means understanding that income and export taxes were unconstitutional to our Founders.
-- Don't bail out debt with more debt. George Washington wrote in 1799 to James Welch, "To contract new debts is not the way to pay for old ones." Thomas Jefferson similarly admonished Samuel Kercheval in 1816, "To preserve (the) independence (of the people), we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt." (Some are quick to point out that Thomas Jefferson financed the Louisiana Purchase with government loans, but they overlook the fact that Jefferson's administration lowered the federal deficit by nearly one-third during his eight years in office.)
-- Have a pay-as-you-go government. If we don't have the money, we shouldn't spend it. Period. No more debt. No more bailouts. No more spending. As Thomas Jefferson wrote to Fulwar Skipwith in 1787, "The maxim of buying nothing but what we (have) money in our pockets to pay for … (is) a maxim which, of all others, lays the broadest foundation for happiness."
-- Minimize taxes to citizens. Our earliest government's primary tool to raise revenue was from tariffs, not through the countless taxes placed upon citizens today. That is one reason I say to abolish the unconstitutional Internal Revenue Service and implement a "fair tax," which doesn't penalize productivity and will bring American manufacturing back within our borders. As James Madison said in 1783: "Taxes on consumption are always least burdensome because they are least felt and are borne, too, by those who are both willing and able to pay them; that of all taxes on consumption, those on foreign commerce are most compatible with the genius and policy of free states."
-- Get over the greed. We're in this financial mess because of greed. Why is government spending out of control? Greed. Why do we, as individuals and as a nation, keep falling deeper into a pit of debt? Greed. Alexander Hamilton, the first secretary of the Treasury, believed that a government that could use greed to motivate its people would become powerful and wealthy. Unfortunately, we've taken it to the extreme. We've become a nation that confuses our needs and greeds, and we've got to get back to the basics if we're ever to understand and overcome the heart of this financial crisis.
Call me altruistic; say the plan is oversimplified. But even mom always taught me when I was young, "If you get in a pinch, go back to the basics." It works in martial arts. It works in the movies. It works in marriage. It works in financial markets. And it worked for our Founding Fathers.
What we need today are far more men and women in government with our Founders' financial forethought, cautiousness and discipline. But that is not what we have. That is why I've joined the voter revolution across this land to oust political corruption and stalemate. If you're ready to join millions of other Americans in that commitment, then give me three steps: Make a pledge to bring about political change in future elections; recall unconstitutional congressional incumbents; and rise up and elect above-reproach, non-greedy and selfless representatives who aren't afraid to stand up to governmental status quo and corruption, will vote for constitutional restrictions of government, reduce big government (deficits, budgets, spending and taxes), reform the tax code (by providing a "fair tax" or its equivalent) and fight for a constitutional amendment that would mandate a balanced federal budget.

The truth is most members of Congress voted to pass the bill but don't have a clue what is in this 500-plus-page legislation, which was birthed in the White House just two weeks ago as an infant of only three pages. Then it was voted down at the Capitol a week later in its adolescent-sized 100 pages. And of course, in good bureaucratic fashion, it met the criteria to be mature when it was more than five times that size and packed with governmental goodies. And the president signed it just an hour after receiving it from Capitol Hill Friday. I guess that speed-reading course paid off.
In the fine print, inserted between the lines of that 500-plus-page bill, are loads of fiscal additives and more financial toxic relief. H.R. 1424 -- the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, which now has been signed into law -- officially includes more than $112 billion in political hors d'oeuvres and pork-barrel teasers and sweeteners that have absolutely no direct relation to the Wall Street bailout but were included to bribe congressional naysayers and others to get on the greed train:
-- $6 million in tax breaks for wooden-arrow manufacturers in Oregon.
-- $148 million in tax breaks for wool-producing companies.
-- $128 million in tax breaks for the manufacturers of car-racing tracks.
-- $10 million in tax breaks for small television and film producers.
-- $223 million in tax breaks for Alaskan fishermen.
-- $33 million in tax breaks for corporations operating in American Samoa.
-- $192 million in tax breaks for rum producers in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
What the &$=/?! And that's just a drop in the bailout bucket. And we the taxpayers are just supposed to sit back and take it in the arrears?
Shockingly -- or maybe not so -- both Democratic and Republican nominees for president, self-professed agents of reform, followed the cattle call to back the bailout. Sen. Obama, who claims to be the messiah of change, sure is showing his true colors in two huge decisions: his appointment of politics-as-usual Joe Biden and his vote to pass this economic bailout bill and drive us deeper into debt. And quite frankly, Sen. McCain also is disappointing me at this point. At the Republican convention, John talked about bringing the power back to the people. So he chose Sarah Palin and finally gained my respect and vote by picking this Washington outsider. But when he had the perfect opportunity to side with the majority of Americans, who didn't want to incur a trillion dollars more in debt, he voted for not only the bilking bailout but also the earmarks and pork-barrel projects packed inside.
John, you gained my vote with your conservative choice in Gov. Palin; don't lose my vote (and others' votes) by your return to politics as usual. For many of us, you have one last chance in the debates. You must choose radical reformation. This is a time for maverette Sarah to stand up to maverick McCain and say, "Enough is enough!" Speak up, Gov. Palin. Please speak up!
All is not lost yet. We still have a voice in this bailout; it's at the ballot box in November's elections. The remedy for our country is clear. Congress doesn't need another bailout but a roundhouse kick right out the door. I plead with you to join me and millions of others in a voter revolution to oust political and congressional corruption and stalemate. If the members of Congress from your states or districts voted to pass this bailout bill and gamble nearly $1 trillion of our children's and grandchildren's money -- in addition to showing the reckless fiscal behavior of stuffing such a bill with perks and pork -- you must not re-elect them. If your representatives voted for this economically rotten (not rescue) bill, vote them out in November by voting for new blood that has a track record of fiscal prudence and consistently will vote for constitutional limitations of government, reductions of big government (deficits, budgets, spending and taxes), reformation of the tax code (by providing a "fair tax" or its equivalent) and a constitutional amendment for a mandated balanced federal budget.
Despite the heartbreaking passage of this bill, thank God 161 representatives and 25 senators opposed it and weren't enticed by the pseudo-urgent Wall Street panic, their own re-election pressures, or the Senate's pork-barrel schmoozing. For example, I commend Rep. Don Young, R-Alaska, who voted "no" for the emergency economic bill despite the fact that the tax break for Alaskan fishermen was inserted to sway him to bite at the bailout. Rep. Young is correct in a letter to his constituents: "This bill is nothing more than a slippery slope to socialism."
One thing is apparent: Alaska can produce some great Americans.
When Hank Paulson demanded $700 billion to haul away the trash in the dumpsters of JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs -- assuring us we could hold a garage sale of the junk -- they rebelled. They acted as the nation, by 100 to one, demanded. They killed the Wall Street bailout.
The Dow quickly sank another 1,000 points, and, charged with criminal irresponsibility by the elites, the GOP buckled, reversed itself, rescued the bailout -- and was wiped out on Nov. 4.
Now we hear from Paulson that the $700 billion Congress voted will not, after all, be used to buy up all that rotten paper on the books of the big banks. Some banks are using the cash to buy other banks.
So Republicans are right to be enraged. They are victims of the biggest bait-and-switch in political history. But they are now about to do something terminally stupid. With GM, Ford and Chrysler teetering on the brink, they are turning a cold stone face to Detroit and are about to follow the counsel of that quintessential Bushite Dick Darman, who said of our computer chip industry, "If our guys can't hack it, let 'em go."America responded -- by letting George H.W. Bush and Darman go.
Are Republicans aware of what they are about to do?
When workers, execs, engineers, dealers, salesmen and suppliers are all factored in, the Big Three employ 3 million people who contribute $21 billion a year to Social Security and Medicare, and $25 billion in federal income taxes. Add in all the businesses that depend on the auto industry, and we are talking about one-tenth of the U.S. labor force.
As columnist Tom Piatak of Chronicles and Takimag.com writes, 850,000 retirees, and their families, depend for pensions and health care on the Big Three. If they go under, the burden falls on us.
And to let the auto industry die is to write America out of much of the economic future of the planet.
In a good year, like 2005, Americans buy more than 17 million new cars, and West Europeans as many. Tens of millions in Eastern Europe, Russia, China, India and Southeast Asia are now moving into the middle class each year. These folks will all need or want one or two family cars. If we let the U.S. auto industry die, that immense and burgeoning market will be lost forever to America, and ceded to Asia.
"Who cares?" comes the free-traders' reply. Japanese and Koreans are setting up factories here. They can pick up the slack.
But that means Americans will work for and depend on foreign companies for a necessity of our national life as vital as the imported oil and gas on which our cars and trucks operate. All the profits of the mighty automobile industry in America will be sent abroad.
Before Republicans follow this free-trade fanaticism to their final interment, they might study the results of a poll by Peter Hart:
-- Seventy-eight percent of Americans believe the U.S. auto industry is highly or extremely important. Three percent think we can do without it.
-- Ninety percent of Americans believe the death of the U.S. auto industry would do great damage to our economic future.
-- By 55 percent to 30 percent, Americans favor federal loans to save it. And by 64 percent to 25 percent Americans back President-elect Obama's resolve not to let the U.S. auto industry go under.
If the GOP blocks these loans, and the industry dies, the party can forget about Ohio, Michigan and the industrial Midwest. For the Reagan Democrats will never come home again. Nor should they.
By the choices we make, we define ourselves and reveal what we truly care about. Thus, consider:
We bail out the New York and D.C. governments of Abe Beame and Marion Barry. We bail out a corrupt Mexico. We bail out public schools that have failed us for 40 years.
We bail out with International Monetary Fund and World Bank loans and foreign aid worthless Third World regimes.
We bail out Wall Street plutocrats and big banks.
But the most magnificent industry, the auto industry that was the pride of America and envy of the world, we surrender to predator-traders from Asia and Europe, lest we violate the tenets of some 19th-century ideological scribblers that the old Republicans considered the apogee of British stupidity.
Nancy Pelosi is talking about tying loans to a restructuring of the industry. But Congress is not competent to do that.
What needs to be restructured is the U.S. tax-and-trade regime.
Dump globalism. Instruct Japan, Canada, Korea, Germany and China that if they wish to sell cars here, they will assemble them here and produce the parts here. And we shall have the same free access to and same share of their auto market as they have of ours.
To accomplish this, use the same import quotas and tariffs Ronald Reagan used to save the steel industry and Harley-Davidson.
Reciprocal trade. Even Democrats like FDR used to practice it.
To hear the media tell it, arrogant corporate chiefs failed to foresee the demand for small, fuel-efficient cars and made gas-guzzling road-hog SUVs no one wanted, while the clever, far-sighted Japanese, Germans and Koreans prepared and built for the future.
I dissent. What killed Detroit was Washington, the government of the United States, politicians, journalists and muckrakers who have long harbored a deep animus against the manufacturing class that ran the smokestack industries that won World War II.
As far back as the 1950s, an intellectual elite that produces mostly methane had its knives out for the auto industry of which Ike's treasury secretary, ex-GM chief Charles Wilson, had boasted, "What's good for America is good for General Motors, and vice versa."
"Engine Charlie" was relentlessly mocked, even in Al Capp's L'il Abner cartoon strip, where a bloviating "General Bullmoose" had as his motto, "What's good for Bullmoose is good for America!"
How did Big Government do in the U.S. auto industry?
Washington imposed a minimum wage higher than the average wage in war-devastated Germany and Japan. The Feds ordered that U.S. plants be made the healthiest and safest worksites in the world, creating OSHA to see to it. It enacted civil rights laws to ensure the labor force reflected our diversity. Environmental laws came next, to ensure U.S. factories became the most pollution-free on earth.
It then clamped fuel efficiency standards on the entire U.S. car fleet.
Next, Washington imposed a corporate tax rate of 35 percent, raking off another 15 percent of autoworkers' wages in Social Security payroll taxes
State governments imposed income and sales taxes, and local governments property taxes to subsidize services and schools.
The United Auto Workers struck repeatedly to win the highest wages and most generous benefits on earth -- vacations, holidays, work breaks, health care, pensions -- for workers and their families, and retirees.
Now there is nothing wrong with making U.S. plants the cleanest and safest on earth or having U.S. autoworkers the highest-paid wage earners.
That is the dream, what we all wanted for America.
And under the 14th Amendment, GM, Ford and Chrysler had to obey the same U.S. laws and pay at the same tax rates. Outside the United States, however, there was and is no equality of standards or taxes.
Thus when America was thrust into the Global Economy, GM and Ford had to compete with cars made overseas in factories in postwar Japan and Germany, then Korea, where health and safety standards were much lower, wages were a fraction of those paid U.S. workers, and taxes were and are often forgiven on exports to the United States.
All three nations built "export-driven" economies.
The Beetle and early Japanese imports were made in factories where wages were far beneath U.S. wages and working conditions would have gotten U.S. auto executives sent to prison.
The competition was manifestly unfair, like forcing Secretariat to carry 100 pounds in his saddlebags in the Derby.
Japan, China and South Korea do not believe in free trade as we understand it. To us, they are our "trading partners." To them, the relationship is not like that of Evans & Novak or Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. It is not even like the Redskins and Cowboys. For the Cowboys only want to defeat the Redskins. They do not want to put their franchise out of business and end the competition -- as the Japanese did to our TV industry by dumping Sonys here until they killed it.
While we think the Global Economy is about what is best for the consumer, they think about what is best for the nation.
Like Alexander Hamilton, they understand that manufacturing is the key to national power. And they manipulate currencies, grant tax rebates to their exporters and thieve our technology to win. Last year, as trade expert Bill Hawkins writes, South Korea exported 700,000 cars to us, while importing 5,000 cars from us.
That's Asia's idea of free trade.
How has this Global Economy profited or prospered America?
In the 1950s, we made all our own toys, clothes, shoes, bikes, furniture, motorcycles, cars, cameras, telephones, TVs, etc. You name it. We made it.
Are we better off now that these things are made by foreigners? Are we better off now that we have ceased to be self-sufficient? Are we better off now that the real wages of our workers and median income of our families no longer grow as they once did? Are we better off now that manufacturing, for the first time in U.S. history, employs fewer workers than government?
We no longer build commercial ships. We have but one airplane company, and it outsources. China produces our computers. And if GM goes Chapter 11, America will soon be out of the auto business.
Our politicians and pundits may not understand what is going on. Historians will have no problem explaining the decline and fall of the Americans.

So I ask for all this we have why is it such a hard thing to go out on one day of the year once every 4 yrs for the Presidential vote and once every 2 yrs for Congressional votes and once every 6 yrs for Senatorial votes. Shame on You and All of us that don't take this Liberty and Freedom we have more preciously. Men & women have died for this and WE ought to honor them by voting, What do you say?
